Back-to-School 2021-22 Newsletter

Dear Park Lane Patrons and Families,

Welcome back!  It’s been a very nice summer, and I’m so excited to have students back in school again!  These past couple of years have really been tumultuous and extra stressful for our sweet students.  While we know we will continue to have some challenges, we’re looking toward establishing a more normal school setting as we strive to heal and move forward through the challenges we’ve faced.

Important Information:

Back To School Videos and Open HouseWe are having a hybrid style Back to School Night this year.  We will be posting short videos with important classroom and school information on our school’s website: https://parklane.canyonsdistrict.org/.  Videos will be posted beginning Wednesday night (August 11th).  Please watch the school’s and PTA’s videos, as well as your students’ teacher’s video prior to coming in for our open house. Click Here for Back-to-School Night videos.

The Open House will be from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 13th.  At the open house new students will be able to meet their teachers and returning students will be able to familiarize themselves with their new classrooms. Parents  will also get the opportunity to talk to their students’ teachers and other school faculty and ask any follow-up questions.  We’re going to keep it casual so please feel free to come and go when you please.

First Day of School – August 16th (or 19th for Kindergarten) – We are rolling out the red carpet again! All 1st-5thgrade students will line up with their classes (we’ll be out to help new students if they don’t know where that is) on August 16th, and then enter the school via the front doors as we welcome them back to school.  Kindergarteners will also have a red carpet welcome on the 19th, but they will enter through their classroom doors by the kindergarten playground.

Staff ShortagesWe are in serious need of additional staff members to join our family and make a difference in the education of our students.  Current needs include classroom aides and paraeducators to work in classrooms, as well as interventionists to work with small groups of students on specific skills.  We are also really in need of a Playworks (PE) Brainbooster tech.  All positions are part-time, during school hours, and entry level.  They could be great even for someone who has never worked in a school before.  If you love kids, this could be a great opportunity to do something good.

We also are continuing to experience a substitute teacher shortage.  If you are interested/willing to help us cover classes, in case of a teacher absence, please call Jeannie in our main office at 801-826-9025, and she will help you complete the necessary paperwork.  Thank you for helping.

Park Lane School Opening Plan – Unfortunately COVID isn’t completely out of the picture, and we are starting another year with a Covid Safety Plan.  Masks are not required at school, however we will still have protocols in place to reduce transmission of the virus at school.  You can find our Park Lane Elementary COVID safety plan online at https://parklane.canyonsdistrict.org.   Our plan will be modeled after our district plan which can be found on the district’s webpage: https://www.canyonsdistrict.org/back-to-school/

Online RegistrationAll Park Lane students must register online every year.  Online Registration began August 2nd.  If you have not yet completed online registration please do so ASAP.  Online registration information and links can be found on the district webpage: https://www.canyonsdistrict.org/general-news/back-to-school-register-for-the-2021-2022-school-year-starting-aug-2/.  Our own staff office is also happy to assist you with any questions at 801-826-9025.

Student Drop-off and Pick-upPlease remember to be safe, extra patient, and extremely cautious during drop-off and pick-up during our first few days of school.

  • We ask parents/guardians walking students up to the school to consider parking off school grounds (on the street, or in a nearby parking lot) and follow the safe walking route to the school. Please set the best example for your students by only crossing streets at the crosswalk, and by not walking through the school parking lot.
  • Parents/guardians wishing to use the main parking lot may do so with the understanding that the lot closes for in/out car traffic 8:10-8:30 a.m., in the afternoons from 3:00-3:20 p.m., and on early out days from 1:20-1:40 p.m. (In other words, if you enter the school’s parking lot, please know that you will have to wait until after the gates re-open to exit).
  • A drop-off/pick-up only lane is available on the south side of the building. When using this lane please arrange students to enter/exit on the passenger side of the vehicle.  Remember to pull up as far as possible to allow multiple cars access to load/unload, and please do not park and exit your vehicle while in the drop-off/pick-up lane.

Nut-free Treat Zone – We have some students with severe allergies to nuts.  For the safety of all our students, we are requesting that all shared treats (birthdays, rewards, and class parties) be store bought, individually packaged (new this year), and be nut-free.  This will not change what your child can bring for lunch, but please be cognizant and courteous of students with allergies when making such choices.

Volunteering in the School – Volunteers are being allowed back in our schools.  Volunteers may be subject to a health screening before volunteering and remember that all volunteers need to submit a new volunteer application annually.  Click here to sign up and/or renew your application: https://volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org/volunteersystem/#!/application/volunteer//

PTA – Please support our wonderful PTA.  Thank you, Shannon Melchior, for serving again this year as President. Becoming a PTA member supports our school and allows us to send communication (please sign up for PTA’s MemberHub) about happenings regarding our school.
